Filling: 2 cups dates 1 cup raisins 1 cup nuts 2 cup sugar 1 cup water 1 tbs. lemon juice
Dough: 1 cup white sugar 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup shortening 3 eggs 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. soda 4 cups flour 1 tsp. vanilla
Grind together dates, raisins, and nuts. Add sugar, water and lemon juice. Cook 10 minutes and let cool.
Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs and beat well. Add dry ingredients and vanilla. Divide dough in halves, or better yet, in quarters. Roll out and spread filling on dough and roll up. They will slice more easily if frozen or at least chilled thoroughly.
Slice 1/4 inch thick. Bake on greased cookie sheet at 375 degrees for 12 minutes.
