Sift together the dry ingredients. Cut, or rub in, the shortening. Then add milk to make a soft, feathery dough, drop by spoonfuls (or roll out lightly and cut with biscuit cutter) on top of vegetable stew, well cooked beans, or stewed holiday chicken.
Take care that all rest on top and none, crowded underneath others. In this way they may be cooked in clear broth, also to serve with your favorite gravy. Cover the kettle loosely. Cook dumplings for 15 minutes without lifting the cover. |
