Corn Bread

1 cup corn meal
1 cup flour
3 1/2 tsp. baking powder
3 tbs. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 egg
1 cup milk
1/4 cup melted shortening

Sift flour, measure; sift again with corn meal, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Beat egg slightly, add milk and shortening. Combine with dry ingredients, stirring only until moist.

Pour into well-greased square pan (8 x 8 x 2 inch). Bake in moderate hot oven (425 degree) 30 minutes or until done.
