Simmer 1 1/2 cups of raisins for 15 minutes in 3/4 cups of water. Drain. Keep 1/2 cup of raisin water to use in cookies. Cream together butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla. Mix well. Stir in 1/2 cup raisin water. Sift together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, baking powder, salt and cloves. Add oatmeal.
Add sifted ingredients to mixture. Add drained raisins and 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional).
Drop by teaspoons 2 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 13 minutes at 375 degrees or until done.
